The Accredited Certificate in the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL)

(Accredited by the University of Northampton at 60 Masters Level Credits) 

 

Intended audience

This course is aimed at teachers (SEAL and PSHE coordinators), middle managers and headteachers in primary, secondary and special schools/Pupil Referral Units, and local authority personnel (e.g. psychologists, Healthy Schools leads, behaviour, inclusion and advisory officers, CAMHS workers)

The course provides participants with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to support the effective implementation of the SEAL curriculum approach in their school or workplace, and to act as leading practitioners to support schools and other educational settings in their local authority.

Many Local Authorities will find the course a cost-effective way to develop capacity by setting up their own groups of up to 20 participants.

 

Learning outcomes

  • In-depth understanding of the rationale for developing social  and emotional learning in schools

  • Knowledge of the relevant research base : key neurological, psychological and social theories and concepts

  • Knowledge of action research methodology and the (optional) completion of a piece of action research on social and emotional learning in their own school (for those seeking accreditation)

  • Understanding the importance of the links between the explicit curriculum and the environment in promoting social and emotional learning

  • In-depth familiarity with different components of SEAL resources and how they link to the wider curriculum and other aspects of school life 

  • Familiarity  with the issues surrounding assessment and with a range of tools for monitoring and  evaluation

  • Understanding  and using a range of strategies to identify and address the professional development needs of colleagues

  • Understanding the processes involved in sustaining and embedding institutional change

 

Structure

The course consists of 30 hours of direct teaching, as well as an (optional for those seeking accreditation) individual action research project to meet the needs of participants.  Individual tutorials and remote support are available for participants throughout the course by arrangement.

The taught component can be offered in a range of formats to suit the client’s context and needs, at a location near to participants’ places of work.

 

Accreditation

Accreditation of the course is through the University of Northampton. Successful completion of the course, associated portfolio and action research project offers 60 credits at Masters Level (transferable to learning institutions in the UK and Europe).    

For participants who do not wish to take advantage of the accreditation route, a certificate of completion from the SEAL consultancy will be available.

 

Cost

The current cost for each participant is £550. This includes five contact days, all materials, and email and telephone support.

If participants wish to benefit from the opportunity for accreditation, a charge of £150 per person will be made by the accrediting university. Alternatively, where a course is funded by the local authority, prices will be negotiate directly with you.
